Learning Experience Journal
1. Assessment of the Environment
  • Personnel- There were a lot of radiologists and such in the radiology department. One Monday, i worked with a man named Denis, and he was a really good teacher, i learned a lot with him. There was also a nice guy named Frank, who was really funny. There were a few other people who i didn't learn their names, but they were all nice to me and were really chill and joking around with each other. Everyone seemed really nice.
  • Services Provided-  In radiology, they do xrays, CT's, MRI's, upper GI's, and many other diagnostic procedures for patients.
  • Equipment- There was a lot of equipment used in the radiology department, all to see the inside of the body to diagnose what was wrong with the patient. I saw a lot of xrays and other fancy machines that looked really big and expensive.
  • Technology Utilized-
    • Regis Model 190
    • Regis Model 170
    • Copy Machine
    • DryView 8700
    • Computer
    • Canon DR-2010 c
    • Portable XRay machine
    • Upper GI maching
    • etc.

Observation
  • Health Care Professionals- All of the HC professionals were really nice and funny. They would all talk to each other and me. They looked like they were having fun on the job and seemed liked they enjoyed what they were doing.
  • Teaming Skills- All of the workers were very good at teaming up. If someone needed help with something, they would ask another professional, and they would gladly help. All of the workers seemed like they liked each other, and they worked wellas a team.
  • Communication Skills- All of the workers had good communication skills. When they were talking about a patient or something, they would all know who they were taking about. Also, if they had a question, they would go ahead and ask it, no problem. They also had all of their own lingo what they would use with each other, so yes, they did have good communication skills.
  • Safety Procedures- While in radiology, everyone always had good safety procedures. When Densi was going to have to touch a baby to take and xray, he first washed his hands, then put on his gown, then the gloves. Also, when i went into a room where they were preforming a test with a lot of radiation, they had to wear lead aprons, and i had to stand behind a wall that is supposed to like protect you from the radiation.
  • Therapeutic/Diagnostic Procedures- There were a lot of diagnostic procedures that i saw this week. First i saw a portable xray on a mn in the PACU who had aspirated during his surgery. Second, i saw a portable xray on an infant with a collapsed lung. Third, i saw an MRI on a man with face paralyzation. Last, i saw an upper GI on another infant, which was really interesting.
 Knowledge
  • New Information Learned-I learned a lot of things this week, because Denis was a really good teacher and was talking to me about everything he was doing while he was doing it. I learned that the reason doctors tell you not to eat 12 hours before surgery is so that you wont aspirate during surgery. I also learned that the scapula is a very hard bone to break and it is really thick and most likely doesn't break normally. I also learned that an upper GI on an infant only takes about 15 minutes. These were only a few things i learned in radiology this week.
  • Medical Terminology-
    • Upper GI- upper gastrointestinal series
    • XRay- X Radiation
    • MRI- Magnetic Resonance Imaging
    • CT- computed tomography
    • Apron- Lead apron
    • Etc.
  • Skills Learned- I learned how to flip a baby over so you can put the xray thing under it. I also learned how to put the xray films into the machine that then shows them on the computer screen.
Evaluation
  • Personal Experience- On Monday, i had a really good day. I was like running around the whole hospital seeing patients and taking portable xrays. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot of new things. Then on Wednesday, the whole department was really slow, so for more than half of the time i just sat in the room with everybody who was just talking and on their phones on facebook and playing games. But on Wednesday, i really enjoyed seeing the upper gi on the infant because i got to look at a real diagnostic test which was really cool.
  • Educational Value- I learned a lot of stuff on Monday, because Denis was teaching me a lot, but then on wednesday, i learned how boring it can be in radiology if you dont have any patients to see or help.
  • Professional Value- It was a good experience to see how the professionals were acting in the radiology department. It seems like a really cool job that you can still have a lot of fun with your other professionals too.
Learning Report
1. What were your responsibilities or duties this week?
  • When Denis and I wen into the nursery to take a portable xray on an infant, i was resposible for putting the films under the baby while he was holding it.
  • I was also responsible for talking to everyone.
2. What new knowledge or skill did you learn this week?
  • I learned how an upper gi is done- you drink some sort of liquid, and then the doctor takes a lot of pictures of that liquid going all the way down your digestive system.
    3. What was the best thing that happened in radiology this week?
    • The best thing that happened to me this week was probably seeing the upper gi on the infant. It was really cool being able to go into the room and see that diagnostic test preformed in real life.
    4. What was the worst thing that happened in radiology this week?
    • On Wednesday, it was really slow, and none of the doctors had any patients or anything they needed to do, so they were all sitting around talking. Then eventually one by one more people were coming into the room and were standing, so like everybody was standing around talking, and i was just awkwardly siting on the edge of the circle not participating in the conversation or doing anything. So it was really boring and really awkward.
    5. The "worst" was not really a personal mistake, so there was no way to correct it.
    • My worst was not a personal mistake, and there was nothing to do to correct it because a lady told me to sit down, so i did.. and i couldnt participate in the conversation because they were talking about personal hospital stuff and i could not contribute to the convo and it was really awkward.
    6. This weed was good, because i learned a lot on monday and i was really active, and wednesday eventually got fun at some point. I learned a lot and had a really good week in radiology.

    Experience Journal
This week I was in radiology. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot of new things. When i first walked in on Monday, i went to the desk and introduced myself to the two women, and they were nice, and one of the ladies took me back to the radiology computer room and told me to wait until a doctor came in. So i waited for a few minutes, and then Denis came in, so i introduced myself and he said hi and then proceeded to go to his computer and look at an xray and do some stuff. Then he got a call that he needed to go the PACU in a hurry, so we like rushed over there and i saw Marcela and Tyler in there too. Then Denis took an xray of the man's chest and we went back and looked at the films. Then he got another call to go to the nursery. so we took an xray of an infant who ended up having a collapsed lung. Then we talked to an old woman patient who was getting a series of tests done. It was really busy compared to wednesday. On wednesday, i just sat in a chair for most of the time until Frank went to go do an upper gi on an infant, and i went in and observed. I had a lot of fun in radiology, and i learned a lot of new things.

    2. Define mammography and the recommended schedule for women.
Mammography is the study of the breast using x ray. and you are supposed to get one every year.

    3. Explain the term ionizing radiation.
is radiation composed of particles that individually carry enough energy to liberate an electron from an atom or molecule, ionizing it.

    4. What is a scattered radiation?
the process of emitting radiant energy in the form of waves or particles.

    5. What safetly requirements are in place to protect health care professionals from excess radiatoion?
